In addition to electronic wizard Moby (allstar, Jan. 21), a heap of major recording stars have joined Elton John's MusiCares Person of the Year tribute dinner, scheduled for Feb. 21 in Los Angeles.
Sting, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Melissa Etheridge, Mary J. Blige, Diana Krall, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, and Natalie Cole have all signed on to pay tribute to John. Past Person of the Year winners Tony Bennett and Gloria Estefan (Wonder was also a recipient) will also step up to return the favor. Additional surprise guests are likely as well. Many of the artists participating in the dinner will perform John classics and an all-star finale is expected.
The black-tie affair, held at 20th Century Fox's Stage 8, is part of Naras' Grammy week festivities. The 42nd annual Grammy Awards take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 23. A silent auction offering music and sports memorabilia will precede the dinner.
Proceeds from the Person of the Year tribute dinner continue to provide essential support for MusiCares' Financial Assistance Program, which helps provide music people with vital medical and personal assistance as well as providing critical funds for musicians who have grown older with no means of economic support.
MusiCares Person of the Year honors have gone to the likes of Stevie Wonder, Luciano Pavorotti, Quincy Jones, Tony Bennett, and Gloria Estefan since its inception in 1991.
