Phil Collins, formerly of Genesis but a long-time solo performer, has a new CD called "Going Back."
"Well, all my life I've wanted to do a covers album. I think it's the best record I've ever made, and certainly the most fun to make," says Collins.
At Collins's recent gig at the Roseland Ballroom in Midtown, he performed his new cover of "Girl," the Temptations' 1964 hit.
"Well, I wanted to play places that are small because it's dance music, and it wouldn't be good in an arena," says Collins.
"Going Back" has plenty of classic Motown hits.
"Pretty much 80 percent Motown, a couple of Curtis Mayfield songs, a couple of Goffard and [Carole] King songs, and I just love it," says Collins.
At Roseland, Collins also played the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud To Beg." But one can be sure Collins hopes people aren't too proud to beg for his new CD.
