Thursday marked a new era for one of Texas’ oldest treasures. Former Genesis drummer Phil Collins announced his plan to give his priceless collection of Alamo artifacts back to the landmark from where they came.Collins, an Englishman, has had a lifetime love for the iconic piece of Texas history.

"For me in the mid-eighties, I was in Washington DC and I was walking through a shop that sold autographed documents, and I came across a letter written by Davy Crockett," he said.

Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Collins stood in front of the Alamo to outline the new collection of about 200 pieces. Many of the artifacts haven't been back to the Alamo since the day they left in 1836.

"The exact place where my collection should be housed, should live, is the place where it came from," Collins said.

Collins learned about the Alamo as a child through movies, and made his first trip to the mission and fort in 1973 during Genesis' first U.S. tour.

"It was here, San Antonio, The Alamo, the shape of that church. There was just something," Collins said. "Why I didn't get as fascinated by something in English history, I will never know."

The collection includes things like Jim Bowie's knife, one of Davy Crockett's rifles and letters from William B. Travis.

"Some people would buy Ferrari’s, some people would buy houses," Collins said. "I bought old bits of metal."

Collins will pay for the items to be shipped to San Antonio from his basement in Switzerland in phases, and hopes they will be on site by October.

As a long time fan of Phil Collins and Genesis I was pleasantly surprised to hear that he has been interested in Texas history for all these years. And to see that he has a heart as big as Texas with this very generous donation of priceless artifacts .Is just totally an expression of kindness and unselfishness . What a great person (and fellow Texan ). !!!!! THANK YOU!!!
