Peter Gabriel needs no introduction. The drummer, flautist, songwriter and singer has enjoyed an eclectic career spanning six decades and has had a hand in some of British music’s most definitive moments.
From the creation of his eccentric stage persona as front man of prog-rock pioneers Genesis to his stellar solo career, Peter has consistently pushed songwriting boundaries and loosened the public perception of pop.
Always looking for ways to visually interpret the music, he’s donned giant fox heads, sunflower costumes and bat wings on stage, while his ground-breaking video for eighties hit single Sledgehammer earned him a clutch of accolades including a record nine MTV Awards.
More recently, the Hall of Fame inductee has focused on producing and promoting world music through the WOMAD festival – now in its 31st year – and his Real World record label. He has also had a hand in pioneering digital music distribution methods and was a founding partner in online streaming platform We7.
We caught up with him at The Ivors earlier this month when he presented Randy Newman with the PRS for Music Special International Award. Hear him talk about his obsession with world music and explain the importance of finding your groove when writing songs. He also reveals plans for a new songwriters’ festival and talks about his recent work with Bon Iver, Regina Spector, Arcade Fire and Feist.
