Peter Gabriel's Hats Were A Hit With The Stones Set

Peter Gabriel had his first brush with rock 'n' roll in his teens when Keith Richards and Marianne Faithfull bought hats he sold at a London market stall.

A young Gabriel discovered a hoard of hats at his grandfather's house, and had them made over by a milliner before selling them via a stall at the British capital's Kensington Market.

And Gabriel was stunned to find his headwear had become the height of fashion among rock's coolest stars after seeing Faithfull wearing one of his creations on a TV music show.

He tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "I found these hats in my grandfather's dressing up box. I persuaded a gentlemen's outfitters in Piccadilly to get them made up in pinks and greens, hippy colours, and they were sold in Kensington Market where the (Rolling) Stones used to hang out."

"When I came back from school one day I saw Marianne Faithfull wearing one of my hats on (U.K. TV show) Juke Box Jury and I got very excited. Then the place (stall) called back and said Keith Richards had bought one too! That was worth many points at school."
