Peter Gabriel: New Blood Live In London 3D concert film

Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the October 25, 2011 release of the stunning Peter Gabriel concert film New Blood Live In London.

This show was filmed in high definition 3D and is available on multiple formats: the triple-pack 3D release [contains the 3D Blu-ray, regular Blu-ray and DVD versions – MSRP $34.98] regular Blu-ray [MSRP $19.98] and standard DVD [MSRP $14.98].  A deluxe limited edition [MSRP TBA] comes as an 11.5” square 60-page hardback photo book containing the live DVD and Blu-ray, the CD of the New Blood studio album and an exclusive CD of live tracks from the show.

This visual release compliments the release of the New Blood studio album by EMI on October 11th and the 3D version will be released in cinemas in September.  New Blood features many classic tracks including “Biko”, “Red Rain”, “Solsbury Hill”, “Don’t Give Up”, “Blood Of Eden”, “The Rhythm Of The Heat”, “Mercy Street”, “Intruder” and more [Pre-book Order Date September 30]

Filmed in high definition 3D at Hammersmith Apollo in March of this year, New Blood – Live In London In 3 Dimensions captures Peter Gabriel performing live with the 46-piece New Blood Orchestra. The repertoire mixes cover versions from his Scratch My Back album with classic tracks from across his solo career in brand new orchestral arrangements. Gabriel is a renowned live performer and his onstage charisma and instantly recognizable voice combine brilliantly with the orchestral sound palette to breath a new sense of wonder into familiar songs.  As you would expect the concert is also a visual feast, with graphics, animation and imagery blending to enhance and illustrate the music.

With the Bonus Feature section (Blu-ray & DVD only) offering the feature “Blood Donors” – the story behind the project including an interview with Peter Gabriel – New Blood Live In London is a landmark release both for Peter Gabriel and indeed for Eagle. Unmissable.

the sound in the cinema was great, but the 3D picture was not .it would have been better 2D

Finally, there was some great humour. There is a nice little visual at the end of Book of Love that caused some giggles amongst our audience, someone yells out what seems to be "Play Supper's Ready" at the start of In Your Eyes and, after two hours of serene music, culminating in the soft lullaby, Nest That Sailed the Sky, the electronic distortion of an instrumental version of the Tower that Ate People suddenly burst forth as the end credits rolled causing us all to jump. :-)

Vocally, Pete is in fine form and, only occasionally does he have to compete with the loudness of the orchestra. Ane is a little too theatrical in Don't Give Up but the girl on In Your Eyes is great.

I seriously think these may be remembered as the definitive versions of Pete's songs as the synth versions become dated. Whilst he will be remembered as a tech pioneer, these versions show the core substance of his songwriting. It is a nice bookend to his career.

Wallflower, Boy in the Bubble, Washing of the Water, Downside Up and The Power Of The Heart were all absent, though they were mentioned in the end credits, so perhaps they are in the 2D film only. I was really disappointed by these absences as I am a Mel fan, so I wanted to hear how her voice had matured on Downside-Up and Wallflower is one of my favourite songs.

However, despite the absence of Wallflower, there was a degree of peace/human rights focus with Pete making pointed (but not preachy) comments as he introduced Biko and Signal to Noise.

Saw Live in London 3D at a special showing at a cinema in Brisbane on Sunday (yesterday).

The music was absolutely superb and breathed new life into many of the songs. In fact, I personally preferred the new versions of the songs to the older ones and, as the promotional material says, it allows one to focus on the lyrics, which I prefer.

It was my first time seeing a 3D film and I was less impressed by this. It only seemed convincing about 15% of the time. The fact I was left seeing double for about an hour afterwards left me feeling distasteful about this technology, too.

The concert has a few visuals but Pete is much less restrained than in the past. He directs a lot of the applause towards the orchestra, conductor and arranger and seems intent on making himself less of the focus of attention. Those visuals he did employ worked well, though.

Note that there were a lot less songs than listed above. :-(
