Peter Gabriel Jokes Genesis Reunion is Just a 'Large Brown Envelope' Away

Peter Gabriel @ Q104.3 Peter Gabriel @ Q104.3

Peter Gabriel was in New York City this week to continue his promotional efforts behind the ‘New Blood’ release and stopped by for an interview with the ‘Jim Kerr Rock & Roll Morning Show’ on Q104.3.

He once again tackled the subject of a Genesis reunion, joking with the morning crew that it would take a “large brown envelope” [of money] as the room erupted with laughter. Acknowledging that there had been “great offers” for the group to reform, Gabriel says that he did take the idea seriously for a while, but that it “seemed to be growing into a bigger project” and as he’s mentioned before, he prefers to keep his focus on present day activities.

Gabriel did seem open to the idea of a reunion show for a good cause, but he again used Led Zeppelin’s one-off reunion show as an example of how he’d want to do it right, with adequate rehearsal time prior to the gig.

‘New Blood’ was an attempt to be “bold” through the removal of traditional instrumentation like guitars and drums and Peter says that he hoped to find “new territory” via the updates to the familiar material.

He also revealed during the interview that including ‘Solsbury Hill’ as a bonus track on ‘New Blood’ was a last minute choice for Gabriel, who gave in after getting a large amount of fan requests for the track.

Gabriel continues to work sporadically on new material that he terms as “ideas” rather than fully formed songs, and says that once he wraps up his current promotional activities, he’ll take a fresh look at what might lie ahead.
